Glass Milky Lid on a Meat Pot
Question
Hello,
By mistake, we covered a meat pot with a glass lid intended for pareve really it was milky.
We discovered this 5 minutes later when it was already boiling. What is the status of the lid?
Answer
Shalom,
The lid absorbed from the cooked dish.
If the food was pareve, the lid is permitted. However, if the pot contained meat, there is a significant difference between the rulings of Ashkenazi and Sephardi authorities:
According to Ashkenazi poskim, glass is treated like earthenware — it absorbs and cannot be kashered through hagalah (boiling). Therefore, the lid must be discarded.
According to Sephardi poskim, glass does not absorb at all, so it is sufficient to wash the lid and it may be returned to dairy use.
