Sink for Meat and Dairy Use
Question
Answer
Hello
I didn't fully understand the question regarding the pot and sponge, so I will only address the main issue.
A sink used for washing both meat and dairy dishes, if the sink is empty during washing, there is no concern of mixing meat with dairy. The sink remains kosher.
However, if boiling water from cooking dairy and meat foods is poured into it, [meat sauce, boiled milk, etc.], then the sink becomes treif.
Even in a treif sink, if cold food or utensils are placed, they are not prohibited. However, one should not initially place a pot or hot food there. Also, one should not soak utensils in water there for 24 hours, [this is called 'kavush'].
Even if hot food or utensils were placed, or soaked for 24 hours, in most cases it does not prohibit their use.
